Airbnb is in discussions to invest in Indian hotel management startup OYO, according to a report from The information citing two people familiar with the matter.
If completed, the investment would likely be in the $100 million to $200 million range, one of the people said. It comes just weeks after Airbnb bought U.S. hotel booking startup HotelTonight for more than $400 million.
An Oyo spokeswoman said that Oyo “is working closely with a range of global distribution partners such as Airbnb and other regional and global players. ...None of these relationships are exclusive in nature.”
Oyo’s deal with Airbnb could fall apart, the people cautioned, in part because there are tax-related complexities for Airbnb to invest in a foreign startup. There also is competition among investors to put money into Oyo, another person said.
