Tokyo airports: China-bound departures down 10%-20%

Outbound travel from Kansai airport to China has nearly halved.

On January 13, the Tokyo Immigration Services Bureau released preliminary statistics on passenger movements at Narita and Haneda airports during the year-end and New Year holiday period from December 26, 2025 to January 4, 2026. Compared with the same period a year earlier, total passenger numbers at Narita airport increased by 4.9%, while Haneda airport recorded a 0.9% decline.

Among these, the number of outbound passengers traveling to China fell by 10%-20%. Separately, data from the Kansai airport branch of the Osaka Immigration Services Bureau showed that the number of outbound passengers traveling from Kansai airport to China has almost halved.

Breaking down Narita Airport’s inbound and outbound figures, Japanese nationals totaled 349,810 passengers, up 4.5% year on year, while foreign nationals reached 665,830 passengers, an increase of 5.1%. In terms of destinations, South Korea ranked first with 94,000 passengers, and most destinations saw increases compared with the previous year. However, the number of passengers traveling to China stood at 59,400, a 20.5% year-on-year decrease.
