The NileGuide, the trip planner and personalized travel itinerary site, won the TravelDaily Innovator Award at the China Travel Innovation Summit.
The San Francisco-based company, which came out of beta last month with a new design and functionality, beat four other start-ups – YourTo, Feeyo.com, HiCafe and Lostrip – garnered the most SMS votes during the Startup Challenge Pitch.
The portal promises to be “all you need to plan your perfect trip” with an easy-to-use, fast travel planning tool. It offers more than just advanced search, it’s a one-stop travel planning service.
CEO Josh Steinitz (left) walked delegates through a demonstration of the site where he put together an actual travel itinerary for Beijing.
The NileGuide features more than 120,000 points of interest around the world. It allows you to plan trips, choose which hotels to stay in, choose restaurants, read reviews and expert advice and book them if you wish to.
It then allows you to customize itineraries, share that itinerary with friends so that you can build it together.
You can then print it in a downloadable PDF format. A mobile format is being worked on currently.
It has both an advertising and transaction (through lead generation) business model.
The amount of content it has makes the site a sticky experience, said Steinitz, allowing them to monetise the traffic.
According to him, the content is out there. “We license some of it but the rest of it is free content which we curate, and then we get local experts and editors to take the content from 90% to 100%,” he said.
“We believe there is no one type of traveler but types of trips. We want to give the tools, structure and functionalities for people to plan their trips as easily as possible.”More>>
