The partnership will further combine the two companies’ strengths in branding, content, travel products and industry resources.

China’s leading youth hostel chain, Desti Youth Hostel, has secured a new round of funding, with Chinese education and travel company New Oriental making a strategic investment worth tens of millions of yuan (about millions of dollars).

Going forward, the two companies will leverage their respective strengths in branding, user engagement, product development and tourism resources to deepen cooperation in areas such as co-developing travel products and enhancing the customer experience. Together, they aim to explore new travel products, offerings and experiences tailored to younger consumers.

In recent years, New Oriental has continued to expand its presence in the tourism sector. Alongside developing its own businesses, the company has actively built ties with industry players through strategic investments and other initiatives, exploring opportunities at the intersection of education, culture and tourism.

The investment in Desti Youth Hostel marks another step in New Oriental’s broader expansion into the tourism ecosystem. Through the partnership, the two companies aim to combine Desti Youth Hostel’s expertise in youth accommodation, social experiences and engagement with younger travelers with New Oriental’s strengths in branding, content, travel products and industry resources, offering young consumers a richer and more diverse range of travel experiences.

Founded in 2014, Desti Youth Hostel has grown into one of China’s leading youth hostel chains, with properties across major tourist cities and popular destinations, including Lijiang, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Xi’an, Suzhou, Changsha, Chongqing, Xiamen and Haikou.

Beyond accommodation, Desti Youth Hostel offers a variety of social settings through communal spaces, themed events, travel meetups, cafés and craft beer offerings, creating opportunities for young people from different cities and backgrounds to connect and share experiences.

This positioning means its hostels serve not only as places to stay, but also as physical spaces where young travelers can explore cities, meet new people and exchange travel stories. Over the years, the brand has built a relatively stable customer base and established market recognition, developing a distinctive identity centered on younger consumers and combining accommodation with social experiences.

As travel habits and consumer preferences among younger generations continue to evolve, China’s youth hostel sector is undergoing another wave of transformation. Demand is gradually expanding beyond affordable accommodation to encompass the quality of facilities, social interaction, cultural content and personalized services.

Meanwhile, the youth hostel industry has traditionally been highly fragmented, dominated by independent properties and regional brands. Significant opportunities remain for improvement in brand building, standardized operations and chain expansion. Following a period of industry adjustment, travelers are also placing greater emphasis on accommodation quality, hygiene and safety, privacy, and the overall experience of communal spaces. Against this backdrop, chain operators with strong brand recognition, sophisticated operational capabilities and scalable business models are finding new opportunities for growth.
