The incidents involved taking photos—or gestures that appeared to indicate photo-taking—in restricted arrival and departure areas.

Several Chinese citizens have recently faced entry and exit issues at Phuket International Airport after taking photos, or making gestures suspected of photo-taking in restricted arrival and departure zones.

The individuals involved were ordered by Thai immigration authorities to return to their place of departure on flights operated by their original airlines, or were barred from leaving the country.

The Chinese Consulate General in Songkhla reminded Chinese citizens traveling to southern Thailand that the use of mobile phones, cameras, video recorders and other devices is strictly prohibited in Thailand’s customs and airport restricted areas when photographing customs officers, equipment, immigration counters, security screening procedures, or when taking selfies and posed photos.

Violations may result in penalties including temporary seizure of devices, mandatory deletion of images, refusal of entry or exit, temporary detention, repatriation on the original flight, or denied boarding. In serious cases, offenders may be placed on a time-limited entry restriction list.

Travelers are advised to comply with local laws and regulations, pay attention to airport signage, and avoid taking photos or making suspected photo-taking gestures in restricted immigration areas. If subject to inspection, travelers should cooperate with authorities and avoid irrational behavior such as aggressive remarks or physical conflict that could disrupt your travel plans.
