Hunan Airlines operates more than ten Airbus A320-family aircraft, with early-stage emphasis on popular Southeast Asian destinations.

In the past, direct flights from Changsha to Bangkok were only operated by major carriers such as Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern. Local airlines have long been absent from Southeast Asia outbound routes, a gap that is now beginning to shift.

In the first quarter of 2026, the Civil Aviation Administration of China operating permit filings showed that Hunan Airlines has secured approval for the Changsha–Bangkok route, with a weekly quota of four passenger-and-cargo mixed flights.

The route is scheduled for its maiden flight on September 6. The outbound flight will depart Changsha Huanghua Airport at 16:30 and arrive at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport at 20:10, with a total flight time of 4 hours and 40 minutes. The service will be operated using Airbus A321 aircraft.

This marks the airline’s first international route since establishing its base in Changsha, signaling the official entry of Hunan’s locally based mainline carrier into the international market.

In China, regional airlines launching international routes often rely heavily on local government subsidies. Once passenger demand weakens, routes can quickly become unprofitable and be suspended. However, Hunan Airlines’ development path is notably different from most small and medium-sized carriers in the industry.

The airline was originally founded as Yunnan Hongtu Airlines, with its inaugural flight in 2016 and its primary hub at Kunming Changshui Airport.

In 2017, Tongcheng Travel, an online travel company backed by Tencent and Trip.com Group, acquired a controlling stake in the carrier, making it China’s first OTA-controlled mainline airline.

In 2019, Hunan Caixin Financial Holdings’ industrial fund took an equity stake, facilitating an inter-provincial relocation. By the end of 2020, the airline completed its rebranding as Hunan Airlines and officially moved its main base to Changsha Huanghua Airport, becoming a Hunan-based mainline carrier.

Today, Hunan Airlines operates more than ten Airbus A320-family aircraft. It focuses on building a “four-hour aviation economic circle” centered on Changsha, with early-stage emphasis on popular Southeast Asian leisure destinations such as Bangkok.
