23.5% of Chinese visitors to Japan traveled alone in April-June this year, up from 22.0% in the first quarter, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.
For context, the figure was only 12.2% in 2019, and from 2011 to 2018, the proportion of solo leisure travelers to Japan hovered around 10%.
It wasn’t until 2023 that the proportion of solo travelers to Japan surged to 26.7%, and it has remained above 20% through 2024.
Interestingly, since 2023, the share of Chinese tourists traveling alone to Japan has, for two consecutive years, surpassed those traveling with a spouse or partner.
Solo travel is not unique to Chinese tourists visiting Japan—it is a global phenomenon, particularly pronounced among younger generations.
According to the American Express 2024 Global Travel Trends Report, solo travel is rising rapidly among Millennials and Gen Z, with 76% planning to take a solo trip.
Furthermore, a report by Grand View Research projects that from 2025 to 2030, the global solo travel market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.3%, reaching USD 1.07 trillion by 2030.
Within that period, the Asia-Pacific solo travel market is expected to see a CAGR of 16.1%.
