The new airport is designed to support the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta.

According to Qichacha, on August 15, the Shanghai-Su Nantong New Airport Construction Investment Co., Ltd. was officially established.

The company is a joint venture between Shanghai Airport Authority and Nantong Urban Construction Group, with Shanghai Airport Authority holding a 51% stake and Nantong Urban Construction Group holding 49%.

Why is the Nantong new airport often referred to as “Shanghai’s third airport”?

The main reason is that it shoulders the responsibility of serving the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta:

* In the future, it will become part of Shanghai’s international aviation hub, helping to absorb excess passengers from Shanghai and surrounding areas, easing congestion at Hongqiao and Pudong airports, and integrating with Shanghai’s air network to improve aviation services across the entire Yangtze River Delta.

It is worth noting that with the opening of the Nantong new airport, Shanghai will become the first city in China to have three airports.

However, on a global scale, many major international cities already operate more than two airports.

For example, New York has three major airports: John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty (EWR).

London, meanwhile, has six major airports: Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN), London City (LCY), and Southend (SEN). These multi-airport systems, through coordinated operations and clear division of functions, greatly enhance the city’s air transport capacity and international competitiveness.

Today, the construction of the Nantong new airport is not only an important step in the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, but also a milestone in advancing China’s regional coordinated aviation system.
