Cathay Pacific has announced an order for 14 more Boeing 777-9 aircraft, marking its first new Boeing order in 12 years.
With this latest commitment, Cathay Pacific’s total order for the 777X model increases to 35 aircraft, making it the third-largest buyer of this model worldwide.
Currently, Cathay Pacific’s fleet includes 234 aircraft, with Airbus accounting for 162 and Boeing only 72. Over the past decade, Airbus models like the A320 and A350 have underpinned the airline’s capacity expansion, while Boeing has played a much smaller role.
In fact, Cathay Pacific first ordered 21 Boeing 777X jets back in 2013. However, due to program delays and certification issues, those planes have yet to be delivered.
Now, with the new order in place, deliveries are expected to begin in 2034. Cathay has also secured options for up to 7 more aircraft in the future—signaling a potential full fleet renewal in the next decade.
