A Korean Air aircraft collided with a parked Cathay Pacific aircraft on January 16 at Japan's New Chitose Airport. There were 289 passengers and crew on board the Korean Air aircraft, but there were no injuries. There were no passengers on board the Cathay Pacific aircraft, and there were no injuries.

The number of people traveling across regions during China's upcoming Spring Festival travel rush which starts on January 26 is expected to reach 9 billion, according to state news agency Xinhua. The passenger traffic of railways, highways, waterways and civil aviation is expected to exceed 1.8 billion. The number of people traveling by private cars on expressways and ordinary national and provincial trunk roads will be close to 7.2 billion. 

China-Swiss talks touch on visa-free travel, free trade

China and Switzerland agreed to speed up talks to upgrade their free trade agreement and to simplify visa procedures for travel between the two countries, Chinese state media reported. Bern and Beijing agreed to an early launch of formal negotiations to expand a free trade agreement in place since 2013, state news agency Xinhua reported. China also agreed to provide visa-free entry for Swiss citizens. 

China's outbound tourism market sees accelerated growth

The China Tourism Academy says the recovery process of China's inbound and outbound tourism market is expected to gain further momentum in 2024. The academy predicts that the number of inbound and outbound tourist arrivals will surpass 264 million in 2024, while income generated by international tourists is projected to exceed $107 billion. With the recovery of the global tourism industry in 2023, countries have once again opened their doors to Chinese tourists.

Tourism Fiji event targets China’s Southwestern region

Tourism Fiji, in collaboration with Fiji Airways, hosted a Matai specialist training event in Chengdu, China engaging over 60 agents from the southwest region. Alongside introducing Fiji’s new hotels and plans for 2024, the initiative emphasized expanding destination training to more of China’s tier-one cities. To date, over 680 Chinese travel agents have become Matai specialists, enhancing their knowledge of Fiji’s diverse tourism offerings.

Fosun in talks to sell Thomas Cook to Poland’s eSky 

Fosun Tourism Group is reportedly in advanced talks to sell Thomas Cook to Polish online travel agent eSky. Talks with eSky - which is majority-owned by private equity firm MCI Capital - have been underway for some time, and could result in a deal in the coming weeks. If completed, Thomas Cook would change hands for the second time since its collapse in the autumn of 2019.

China's Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) opens its first ski resort, nestled at 4,500m in the Himalayas and only 120km from Lhasa. Built in just 3 months, the resort saw over 350 skiers on its peak day and can handle 3,000 daily visitors. It symbolizes a new era for winter sports in Xizang and is expected to boost winter tourism as a major attraction.

Cathay Pacific signs up 100 new mainland Chinese cabin crew as it rebuilds post-coronavirus

Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways has signed up 100 cabin crew through its first recruitment drive in mainland China and some have already started work, the company has said. Cathay says it aims to recruit 1,500 people from across the border by 2025 as it builds back.
