Hong Kong could detail plans to end hotel quarantine for inbound travelers in a move designed to trumpet the financial hub’s revival.

The announcement could come as soon as this week with arrivals instead required to undergo self-monitoring for seven days. The implementation date is undecided as it will affect existing operations for the airline and hotel industries.

Hong Kong has steadily relaxed pandemic restrictions since a surge of Covid infections and deaths in March marked a clear split from the mainland, which continues to use strict lockdowns and lengthy quarantines to try and keep cases close to zero.

In addition to the border rules, Hong Kong retains some of the strictest remaining Covid measures in the world as it grapples with thousands of new infections each day.
