Guangzhou has begun searching for a second airport construction site. Nansha district and Zengcheng district are being considered
On September 25h GZ Transportation Committee Chairman Xiaogang Chen presented, “Report on Construction Projects to Strengthen Key Transportation Infrastructure” at a meeting of the 14th National People’s Congress Standing Committee in Guangzhou. The report stated that Guangzhou plans to develop into a world class transportation hub and has launched a search for the second airport’s construction site. They will also survey multiple locations for the construction of several smaller business airports. It is expected that Guangzhou will own over 3 airports in the future.
Xiaogang Chen said that the next stage in the development plan is to continue the expansion of Baiyun Airport and appraise plans for a fourth runway, start construction of the Nansha New District Business Airport, and initiate the search for the second city airport construction site.
Nansha District has already been rumored to be the location for the second city airport for the past two years. At the meeting a committee member said, “Right now we only have the preliminary results for our investigation of Nansha District and Zeng Cheng District as potential locations. We are conducting comparative studies and making proposals but the opinions of the provincial government are still not clear at the moment”. (Translation by David)
