Should travel agents be worried about Google’s move into travel?

The search giant has added hotel prices to its Maps service, targetting the 54% of British business travellers who use search engines for trip information.

Google is moving into the area of the travel agency with the addition of live hotel rates to its popular maps service. The move is likely to appeal to the high proportion of business travellers using Google to research their trip.

Research from Travelport, the technology network that links airlines, hotels and other travel suppliers to travel agencies and online booking sites, says that 54% of British business travellers use the internet to research their trips before they go. This is far and away the most important area of research for travellers. Only 19% of British business travellers use the second most popular method of research – asking a colleague – while 14% ask their business travel agency.
