Tuesday, December 23, 2008: Talks with both Air France–KLM and Lufthansa concerning the purchase of a strategic stake in Alitalia are still “inconclusive” with local media reports that a decision could still take up to a fortnight.

Alitalia and Air France–KLM this week continue to have meetings, with some industry watchers saying that existing partnerships with the Franco–Dutch carrier could place it about Lufthansa in preference.

Still, Reuters has cited a legal source close to the deal saying that an agreement could still be more than a fortnight away.

Lufthansa has this week said that it has the better offer as the Italian carrier will gain more through an alliance with Star Alliance through the German carrier, over an alliance with Skyteam.

The CAI investor group which last week took control of Alitalia formally is eyeing a 13th of January, 2009 relaunch of Alitalia after it merges it with once-rival Air One to create a brand new carrier.

Under a five-year business plan, the consortium is expecting the new Alitalia to return to profitability in 2010.
