Chinese Club Med resort hands out triple refunds after Norovirus outbreak

National Business Daily reported today that around 200 have caught the bug, citing data collected by tourists at the hotel.

The Club Med at China's Yabuli Ski Resort is offering more than a hundred guests compensation worth three times the cost of their vacation after they suffered a severe stomach bug during their stay at the hotel.

Fosun Tourism Group, which runs the hotel, is disinfecting the entire resort and taking other disease control measures, state-backed China News Service reported, citing a company statement. It costs a family of three about RMB7,000 (USD2,500) for a four-night skiing package at the hotel.

Guests there had complained of diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever on February 9, during the week-long Chinese New Year holiday which ended a day later. The Harbin Center for Disease Control and Prevention identified the problem as norovirus, a highly contagious infection that can spread through the consumption of contaminated food.

Fosun is sending in global health and hygiene experts to help deal with the virus under official guidance and ensure there is no potential of it spreading further, it added. Guests staying at the hotel may stay or leave as they wish and will receive appropriate compensation, the firm continued, saying it will compensate medical fees for any guests who need to visit a hospital within two days of checking out.

Original reports suggested around 100 guests had been infected by the virus, but National Business Daily reported on Tuesday that around 200 have caught the bug, citing data collected by tourists at the hotel.
