Of the more than 60 million cross-border visitors to New York city, nearly a million were from China. This makes China the second largest tourist source after UK.

The latest tourism figures released by the authorities in New York say the total number of visitors to the city has reached more than 60 million for the first time. Almost a million of them were Chinese, making them the second largest amount of tourists from a single country.

The New York tourism authority said that up to the end of the year, about 60.3 million tourists were predicted to visit New York, with 12.7 million of them coming from outside the United States.

Both figures have broken historical records.

Chinese tourists still travel mostly in groups, moving around on chartered buses, says Xie Zichao, international sightseeing manager for a California based travel company, Hornblower, which has carried about 300 thousand Chinese travelers to America, accounting for about one-quarter of the company's revenue.

Chinese travellers are expected to replace British tourists as the largest amount of travelers from a single country to New York in 2022, according to Fred Dixon, the chief executive of NYC & Company, the official destination marketing organization for the five boroughs of New York City. He says his company had begun to focus on attracting more Chinese tourists traveling solo or in small groups.
