Kunming Changshui International Airport will open routes mainly to south and southeast Asian countries, said Yang Zesong, deputy director of the city's development and reform commission.
Yunnan is a key bridgehead for China to open up to its southwestern neighbors.
Also, new routes will be launched to Tokyo and major cities in Europe, North America, Oceania and Africa, according to Yang.
"Subsidies will be offered to new international air routes," Yang said.
The airport, which opened in 2012, has 284 routes, including 54 international routes.
