The Chinese government has clearly positioned the tourism industry as a strategic industrial pillar and development target within its Sino-US bilateral economic development strategy. At the same time the US has also upgraded the development of the tourism industry to a national level with the National Travel and Tourism Strategy.
Since the China-US Tourism Leadership Summit, which includes tourism bureau chiefs from 31 Chinese provinces and 50 American states, was established in 2007, Sino-US tourism has recorded over 25 million trips between the two nations at an average annual growth of 7.6% in eight years.
The number of Chinese visiting the US has been growing at an average rate of 18.4% per year and the number of Americans visiting China has been growing at an average of 1.6% per year during this time. Annual tourism traffic between both countries has reached a scale of over four million trips per year.
The average annual growth in the number of Chinese visiting the US is predicted to remain at 10% in the future and the total visitor traffic volume is expected to exceed 20 million between the years 2014 to 2020.
Previously the China National Tourism Administration’s director Jinzao Li said that Sino-US tourism exchanges are now entering a whole new phase that will bring many significant benefits such as increased bilateral development, friendly relations, expanded trade partnerships and enhanced cultural exchanges.(Translation by David)
