The smart travel jacket that has raised $7.2 million and counting on Kickstarter

If someone decided to bury a time capsule to capture the essence of air travel during the 2010s, they might want to include the Baubax Travel Jacket.

If someone decided to bury a time capsule to capture the essence of air travel during the 2010s, they might want to include the Baubax Travel Jacket, with its nine utility pockets for an iPad, portable charger, mobile phone, drink, sunglasses, and passport holder, as well as a built-in inflatable neck pillow and eye mask.

No, it wouldn’t be included because of the jacket’s popularity — or the expected total lack thereof as a mainstream flyer-fashion item — but because of the angst that the creation of the jacket symbolizes.

In a testament to the stress and rigors of flying from Point A to C with a stopover in Point B these days and the premium placed on overhead bin space in coach, the travel jacket, billed as the “world’s best,” has attracted nearly $7.2 million in a Kickstarter campaign and still three days to go till the end of the fund raising.

The campaign, which began in July and ends September 3, has been backed by 36,245 people on the crowdfunding site. The initial goal for the Baubax Travel Jacket campaign was $20,000.

Following are the features of the jacket, which actually comes in eight styles — four for men, four for women — and they include modern-day essentials such as earphone holders, gloves and let’s not forget the blanket to take away that cabin chill.

Why cram all these accessories into a carry-on bag when you can stuff them into your Baubax jacket, blazer or sweatshirt and just pile it into a tray for the security check before the flight? Let’s not forget that the 2010s is the checked-bag-fee era in aviation and that some airlines charge for carry-on bags.

The jacket appears to take some of its inspiration from the ScotteVest, which you might see once or twice if you flew out of your local airport 50 times and carried out some serious reconnaissance looking for one.

Husband-and-wife Yoganshi and Hiral Sanghavi reportedly created the jacket as an answer to their long-distance relationship. With the Kickstarter monies collected, they hope to begin the manufacturing of the jacket and to have it ready in time for the Christmas holiday season.
