Destination weather technology – a new passenger experience for airports

Imagine you’re a traveller who has never travelled before to Dubai at any point between April and October.

The stifling, oven-like atmosphere on arrival would certainly be enough to shock most travellers who have never experience that part of the Middle East before.

Of course, most guidebooks or tips from friends, family and online destination platforms would warn passengers in advance what awaits them as they step outside of the airport, but there is very little people can do to “feel” the climate in their destination before they arrive.

So Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden has developed what it calls the Climate Portal in its Terminal 5.

The rather novel idea is that the facility is split into three zones – cold, hot or big – where passengers can experience the same temperature and other meteorological elements as some of the destinations that the airport’s carriers serve.

The airport says:

“The rooms are connected to online weather services whose data are transformed into a physical experience for you on the premises – all using the latest sound and image technology as well as wind and temperature simulations.

“It’s also a preview of your destination so that you remember to stock up on sunscreen, choose an extra pair of sunglasses or do some last-minute shopping for a really warm sweater.”

The portal will be in place until the end of August this year.
