Social travel app Jianren raises RMB10 million in Series A funding

TravelDaily – Riding on the increasing popularity of vertical social networks connecting strangers that has been fueled by the IPO of popular SNS Momo, travel social networking app Jianren has received RMB10 million in its round A funding, adding to RMB1 million angel investment raised earlier.
Independent travel is the current trend and individual travelers prefer forming their own tour groups to joining tour operators’ groups. Currently, 30% of college students choose to travel with friends, and travelers in their 20s tend to form travel groups of four to six new people. Jianren went online in May 2014 targeting users in their late-20s to late-teens. Its beta version is now online with enhanced functions for users to find travel partners in the vicinity.
“The major players haven’t developed travel companion search services because many people think it is a tiny niche market for bohemians,” says founder Zuolin Xu. “Many users told me they prefer to travel with classmates or friends rather than with complete strangers but they would like to meet new people at their destinations to eat out, go on a pub crawl, and visit the sights so they would be happy to use my app to do this. I believe Jianren’s place in the market is to satisfy the social networking needs of travelers,” he said.
