Ctrip has publicly announced a “Chinese language Cruise Reservation Platform”, revealing a shift of their cruise reservation system to the open platform model.

Ctrip’s cruise reservation platform has a direct connection to major international cruise lines which enables a seamless connection from suppliers to customers. Although the concept of cruise vacations has been in the Chinese travel market for over ten years, until now there was not a single Chinese language platform offering global cruises that displays real-time prices and availability.

The system integration will significantly improve the number of products, offering over 100 ports worldwide and itineraries many years in advance. Customers can use the platform to search prices and availability and get the latest information from the cruise lines. This will eliminate the need for the booking and confirmation stage and ensure that each customer will enjoy the best price.

From Ctrip’s previous customer surveys they have found that the price and the destination’s coastal scenic spots are the most important points for those purchasing cruises, also customers have very limited knowledge about the cruise destinations. This was still during the “1.0 era” of cruise booking, when there was only one booking method and displayed descriptions had a large effect on sales. In contrast, the new platform has three main breakthrough functions; “POI(point of interest)Information Display”, “Online Room Selection”, and “Self-Service Document Upload”.

The “POI Information Display” vividly describes the attraction of a cruise as a way of vacationing, it takes customers aboard a cruise ship for a cruise experience. The POI information display “breaks down” the many fine points of a cruise with pictures, text, and interactive content.

Until now customers didn’t have the option of choosing their own rooms, with Ctrip’s “Online Room Selection” they can see the location of the rooms on the deck profile and choose the room they like best.

The “Self-Service Document Upload” uses creative technology to let customers scan a QR code and then directly upload their own documents, instead of having to bring them to the travel agent. In Korean cruise lines for example, customers only need to upload a passport photo after making their payment and then they can instantly board and depart the same day.(Translated by David)
