Can the Shanghai World´s Fair shake China´s travel industry out of a recession-induced slumber?
The Chinese government is betting that its first-ever world´s fair will draw upward of 70 million visitors, a crowd bigger than any world´s fair in history. The event, which runs from May 2010 through October, is expected to draw mostly Chinese attendees.
"The World´s Fair will definitely generate hotel demand in the Shanghai area," said analyst Mike Olson of Piper Jaffray. Hotels in other parts of China may also benefit as Chinese travelers make stopovers on their way to Shanghai, he says.
