China sees a 10.4% rise in tourist numbers

China witnessed a 10.4% surge in tourist numbers on the first day of the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, official data showed on January 28.

The number of tourists jumped to 50.5 million. Tourist-generated income climbed to RMB 59 billion (USD 8.67 billion), up 13.3% from one year earlier, according to data from China National Tourism Administration.

In terms of outbound tourism, Phuket and Bangkok of Thailand, Nha Trang of Vietnam, Bali of Indonesia, and Singapore were among most popular destinations.

It is estimated that over six million Chinese people will travel abroad during the holiday.
